Homelite UT10580 Chainsaw vs iPhone 6

vs.
Below is a comparison between the Homelite UT10580 Chainsaw and the Apple iPhone 6. Detailed specifications are not included as the devices are not typically compared.

Cost
The UT10580 is approximately $150.

The iPhone 6 is approximately $600.

Ease of use
The UT10580 has only a few controls : throttle control, pull starter, choke, on off switch and a fuel priming pump. There is also a chain tension screw.

The iPhone 6 has a home button, volume control and a camera button. The touchscreen can be unpredictable, like the other buttons as they are software dependent.

Features
The UT10580 is lightweight, has low kickback, a tip guard, low acoustical emissions, and reduced vibration to minimize user fatigue.

The iPhone 6 advertisements suggests users believe that they can become superb athletes, musicians, connect with loved ones etc., thanks to the phone.

Serviceability
The UT10580 uses standard parts such as the spark plug, bar and chain. An exploded view of the chainsaw is included in the manual.

The iPhone 6 is not serviceable. Specialized tools may be required to change the battery, screen or case.

Uses
The UT10580 can be used to cut wood for firewood, yard cleanup and ice sculptures.

The iPhone 6 is the fashion accessory par excellence, can be used for phone calls, sending and receiving SMS messages, taking photographs, surfing the internet and GPS. Software based applications can make the device even more versatile.

Range
The UT10580 uses gasoline, two cycle engine oil and bar oil. It can be used anywhere the fuel and oil can be transported.

The iPhone 6 can be used on, for internet connectivity or telephone calls, or off the mobile telephone network for photographs, viewing documents or videos. It can be charged using a solar panel or other power sources.

Hours of use
Extended use of the the UT10580 will cause fatigue due to the physical nature of the work.

With regard to the iPhone 6, it varies per user. Some people manage to watch full feature films on a the iPhone 6, where as others are annoyed to receive text messages or e-mail.

Emissions
The UT10580 complies with California small engine emissions requirements.

The iPhone 6 is compliant with international radio noise emissions.

Lasting appeal
The UT10580, like most chainsaws, will be indispensable tools decades.

Apple depends on consumer hype for their products. The iPhone 6 is no different. The days building up to the product launch and time following, for the sake of conversation, will justify the purchase of the iPhone 6 to some.  Changes in technology may make the phone obsolete in less than 10 years.

Automobile maintenance tasks that are easily done at home

If you take pride in your work and would like to save some money, here are some automobile maintenance tasks that people can perform on her or his own.

No specialized tools are required, and most tasks take less than an hour.
  1. Tire rotation - use the spare tire when rotating the tires according to the automobile's instruction manual. The wrench for the lug nuts is in the trunk of the vehicle. While it would be nice to have a torque wrench, it isn't so necessary to check the torque with a precision instrument. The spare tire included wrench is usually close to 30cm (1'). Put your body weight into the wrench when torquing the nuts. It will be ample. My vehicle requires 130N-m (96ft-lbs) of torque on the lug nuts.
  2. Check tire pressure - It makes a difference for vehicle handling, fuel economy and tire wear. The tire pressure is on a label in the frame of the driver side door. Check the pressure when cold/not recently driven. A pen style pressure gauge is about $2.
  3. Change light bulbs - if you shop on Ebay.ca or aliexpress.com the prices are significantly cheaper than what you would pay at the local retailer. LED bulb replacements may cause issues unless there is a load resistor.
  4. Change windshield wipers. Read the instructions on the package.
  5. Check Engine Codes - There are number of free Windows software packages. For Android, use Torque (free version also available). A USB or Bluetooth ELM327 code reader cost about $10. The OBD2 port is left to the driver's side below the dash.
  6. Oil and filter change - unless it is going to cost less than $20, it only takes a half an hour to change the oil on a vehicle. Filters are about $5 and the oil can be as low as $1.50 a litre. Unless you live in a very cold climate, stick to conventional oil. Synthetic oils have lower viscosity at lower temperatures than conventional, but do not last any longer.  A filter wrench is about $5, a kitty litter pan is $2, a funnel $2 and the socket or wrench for a drain plug is most likely in your tool kit.
  7. Change the brake pads and rotors - Front disc brakes do not requires any special tools. The rear brakes may require a compression tool that twists and pushes the caliper closed. Drum brakes are a little more difficult, but take much longer to wear out and need replacement. Note: I would suggest to change your brake fluid every couple years to prevent line corrosion, however from personal experience, brake bleeders can be a pain. In the rust belt, where it isn't cold enough that road salt is effective, the bleeders are often ceased, even when protected with rubber boots.
  8. Transmission fluid flush and filter change -Simple tools such as a socket wrench, a pair of pliers and funnel are necessary.
  9. Air filter replacement - The cabin filter is also easily changed.
  10. Replace the battery - Batteries should last about 5 years if your alternator is operating properly. Heavy corrosion around the terminals is not a good sign. Check to find if there are power draws from accessories, chargers, remote starters etc. I have had some success in reviving a dead battery with a desulphator. I use the CLEN model.
  11. Coolant/Antifreeze filter and flush - every 2 to 5 years. To be performed when engine is cool. Wear gloves, goggles, raise car, place bucket under radiator pet cock. Clean any spills as it is very toxic to animals.
  12. Change fuel filter - Disconnect pump(open filler hole then remove the fuse or disconnect the pump. Start the engine til it dies), depressurize the line, and swap the filter. The vehicle needs to be raised.
  13. Change Power Steering Fluid  - Use a turkey baster and the appropriate fluid. Here is a testimony of the effects of changing power steering fluid.
  14. Rustproofing  - methyl alcohol, paraffin (wax/candles), and a little bit of non detergent oil. Mix and put in a spray bottle. More details here : http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2043211
  15. Prime ball joints, sway bars or rod ends with grease - A grease gun is only about $10. Grease, $4 a tube.
  16. Fuel injector cleaners - not necessary unless in extreme conditions - most modern fuels already have the additives for fuel injection cleaning, fuel stabilizing, gas line anti-freeze etc.
  17. Lubricate door, trunk and hood joints/hinges - Lithium grease spray does a great job.
  18. Unmount/Mount Tires and Balance - Deflate tire then break the bead with a wood clamp by compressing the tire. It will release the bead from the rim. You can then use a pry bar to break the remainder of the bead off the rim. Mount - in a similar fashion, you may need to use water, dish soap or a water based lubricant to get the new tire on the rim. Balance - use about 110g of air powered ballistic projectile ammunition (eg. Airsoft BB - .20g 6mm)  Pour beads into the tire before the inflating the tire through the edge of the bead at the rim. Inflate the tire with a compressor.

Unemployment persists - there must be another way

It has been several months now that I have been looking for work. The experience is far too common: skilled or unskilled, breaking into the workforce feels nearly impossible. Hundreds of hours are poured into making the perfect resume for specific postings accompanied by its carefully crafted cover letters which are never read. Following up by a phone call often lands on unanswered voice mails.
Career counselors services have been sought out. Suggestions on revising my resume, motivational talks and e-mails with links to yet another set of opinions on a job search strategy have yet to bear fruit.

What should I do now? I only have a few remaining months of employment insurance. There is the option of returning to school, but after completing a my master's, it has become clear to me that education is not going to help my cause.
I like creative and manual work. My business sense is very poor, thus I am reluctant to start my own business. I would like to note, that relocating frequently for work contracts means that I am not rooted in one town or another. I am currently staying with a parent in a rural location which unfortunately means that I must use a vehicle to make my way into the city. Now that it is winter 35km by bicycle is out of the question.

While writing this blog entry, I am telling myself that I should find a way to become a internet based entrepreneur, freelancer, or someone who can run a business from anywhere. As much as I loved using computers in the past, using social networking, clicking of the mouse and being in front of the computer for hours doesn't give me much satisfaction.

I like working with people, however there is a great deal of satisfaction of realizing projects on my own. Potential business ideas which have come to mind are as follows :
  • On site tutoring for various skills : auto-repair, construction/renovations, computer software training, computer hardware maintenance/repair, cooking/baking, appliance/small engine repair and  maintenance etc.; ( this would more along the lines of empowering individuals. I would not like to take money to do these tasks. )
  • Editing, translation and proofreading of technical documentation;
  • Graphic design - something that everybody can do, but it takes time, as with every task, to do it correctly;
  • Technical drawings, product design etc.
The above list can go on. Literate and able bodied people can do anything they want. There is a learning curve to become more proficient at any task. It is not up to me find the ones where I am willing to pour time into.

The iPhone 7 will most likely have a square screen and a keyboard

There are often things that show up which have been thought of, discovered or invented years ago, and then suddenly, someone brings the idea back out of obscurity and takes credit for it.

This week, a square shaped phone called the Passport was launched. It looks quite different, but it should be fine for most users. I assume the next iteration will have rounded out corners and a few other changes.

Even if the Passport doesn't sell hundreds of millions of units, the designers will have left their mark with some innovative changes to mobile phone design. It will not surprise me in the least if Apple takes the best of the phone and launches an imitation of its own.

Quick tips - sharpen a knife on the bottom of a ceramic bowl or cup

Doing things, whether it be repairing, building or creating something, you may be forced to think of ways to get around the fact that you don't have, at that very moment, the right tool for the job. There are somethings that I would prefer to not skimp on, i.e. jack stand for working on my car's brakes or exhaust, but often enough we can get by with something at hand.

Here are some of my recent discoveries ( not really recent, nor that much of a discovery, but found the following useful when I was stuck)

  • Screwdriver shaft to access terminal when boosting a car
  • Melting a glue stick with a lighter
  • Wine cork as a floater for fishing
  • Acetone or ATF and mineral oil as penetrating oil
  • A tailor's hold pin with a broken tip to change watch bracelet links
  • Towels or newspaper wrapped around a large pot/bottle to maintain a temperature ( dyes, mash for homebrewing, keeping food warm )
  • A fine cotton cloth and a wire hoop for an excellent sieve (malted barley, coffee, soy drink, almond drink etc.)
  • Linseed oil and turpentine for sealing and polishing wood

Developing web sites for low bandwidth

Do you have a metered connection?

Are you connecting through dial-up? Through your mobile phone? A slow connection that makes you wonder who in the right mind came up with the internet?

If so, we have something in common. Earlier this year, I lived in a remote region and have resorted to my old CDMA mobile phone for Internet access. I used the phone as a modem connected by USB to my computer, as I, like most primates with some computer skills, prefer a keyboard, pointing device(trackpoint, mouse, touchpad) and a screen larger than my palm. Unfortunately, I have learnt that web developers are not that conscientious when comes to people who do not have access to VDSL2 connections.

Nevertheless, I strongly recommend that more websites are to be made friendly for people who do not have the bandwidth. Here are some of my suggestions :
  • less images
  • use a font or a limited number of icons for page navigation
  • include "alt" image descriptions or captions

Quiet - Living up to the name

For the past month, I haven't posted much on this blog. Saying that "I've neglected my blog and my followers" is rather common on the web, but I don't think that I have any followers, and I don't think my blog has any feelings.

Regardless, I realise that the amount of time I spend in front of a computer is inversely proportional to my well being. I mainly use the internet for finding information on how to fix something, reading the news, communicating with people over e-mail and applying for jobs. The latter is rather depressing, so it may be the main reason that I do not like being in front of a computer.

Regardless, I have the recurring sentiment that the hubris that comes with modernity hurts us in many ways. Consumer society is certainly the most visible and tangible example : we create products which become waste, and have thus far failed to reincorporate the products into new products. I just heard my friend's automatic espresso machine. It is an impressive piece of equipment : it grinds, brews, and empties out the spent coffee puck in a waste bin. It has been working for the past couple years, which is great, but I cannot say that the coffee is terribly better than a regular stove top espresso or an ibrik used for Turkish coffee.

I beg you Bioware, don't give up the romance

There are few games that kept in as long as Dragon Age and Mass Effect have. It wasn't quite like reading a book, watching a movie, or a series. I had something to do, went about and did it. However the stories, characters and details of the series were like nothing I had seen before.

I am looking forward to the next instalment of the Dragon Age series, I was somewhat confused to see headlines which announce the end of the romance in the Bioware games. Sure, including sapient systems that resemble computerized slime mold isn't controversial, but relationships with intimacy?

Certainly, romance scenes in  video game can seem awkward, but even if you are intoxicated and engaging with a real person, intimacy has always been for me an awkward experience. In movies, books, music and historical passages, romance has always been part of humanity.

Google - There is a need to restore ODF compatibility with your services

I just wanted to have a quick translation of a document, so I went to http://translate.google.com

I uploaded the document and got this :

I thought there might have been a problem with the file. I then selected another file in TXT format : no problem; PDF : no problem. Perhaps my ODT document was too complex. I try a simpler one, still to no avail.

People use LibreOffice, OpenOffice and other products that use the Open Document Format (ODF).

Standards are what allowed the development of languages, tools, culture and the society we know today.

Google, for the love of humanity, please restore ODF compatibility to your services.

Try entering more than a few words on an iPad - Microsoft Office is mainly for viewing documents

It is still beyond me how anybody could use keyboard shortcuts on a tablet like the iPad. The beauty of a laptop and or a desktop is the fact that the screen in unencumbered, you can issue commands with a small cursor and with the keyboard.

You may have heard that Microsoft Office has been release for the iPad. Inasmuch as some claim that it is about time, Google Docs has been a very suitable web based office suite. Nevertheless, it comes down to the fact that a tablet is a device for consuming media, not a tool for productivity (with the exception of those which are equipped with a stylus for handwriting or working with drawings and photos). There are a artists who have adopted a tablet computer for making beautiful paintings, however they are the minority.

Do specifications really matter?

Just over three and a half years ago, I purchased a used business computer : Lenovo ThinkPad T61p. I loved just about everything about it. For what I could afford, it was the best thing around. It is still lugged around with me, but its battery life has dropped from about three hours to one and a half. The occasional falls, including once from a top bunk bed in a hostel, have caused a few blemishes on the chassis, and the excessive pressure caused some darker spots on the screen. Regardless, the machine still works very well.

For a reviewer, talk about numbers is a must, but when it comes do daily use of a machine, whether it is you cell phone or computer, it is difficult to say. Numbers are easy to relate to. The bigger or the smaller, is an indication of how well a system performs. It has nothing to do with how well the user can craft a sentence, make conclusions about survey data or sketch on paper.
You might have heard about the controversy over vacuum cleaner specifications where they indicate the current rating (Amps or Amperes) rather than the "peak horsepower". Anyone with basic arithmetic would know that a 3 horsepower or greater vacuum cleaner would be a no-no in a regular 110V socket - (one horsepower or 1 HP is equivalent to 745W; the maximum current draw for most circuits is 15 amp so about 1650W ).

I ask myself why don't computer specifications matter that much :
  • Screen resolution : you get used to a lower resolution. I have a 1920x1200 screen. However when I used an older ThinkPad with a 1024x768 display, I wasn't bothered in the least. It worked fine. In fact with the larger cells in the LCD, it meant that the screen was much brighter.
  • CPU (Central Processing Unit) : Unless you are working with multi-layer photographs or video editing, and need to process a large amount of them on a daily basis, you won't feel the need to have the mightiest CPU. Even if it ran hot, an old Pentium M from 2002, which is more than enough to browse the web, play games, work on spreadsheet and make a report. I could go further back in time, and this would still hold true. Computers have not really changed in past 20 years.
  • RAM : This one is a little more debatable, but it is now rare to find a machine with less than 512MB of RAM. There are some out there, and for the greater part they should be fine as long as the operating system, assuming it is Windows XP or a light version of Linux like Puppy
  • GPU ( Graphics Processing Unit ): This really depends on the type of game. For simple online games, where 3D graphics are not that important, an integrated GPU, on a low end Intel Celeron, i3-32XX or AMD E1, E2 or A4 is more than enough. If you want to play games at high resolutions, that is you intend to connect your computer to a large screen TV set, you may want to consider getting a GPU with greater capacity. In some games, the CPU is most important, in others the GPU. For obvious reasons, if you are reading this, a high performance PC is not your main concern.
Finally, if the newest Xbox and Playstation consoles are any indication, games are meant to be fun.  it is no longer about the numbers that fewer and fewer people care to understand.

Reading and writing are the best tools we have to live with technology

On the phone :
I am impatient. Today I called Paypal to resolve an issue with my account. The phone system is automated requiring users to listen to long menus for the different options. For most people it is rather frustrating expecting to be able to speak with somebody.
Before calling, it would only be fair to give you online the number options and perhaps have a key number to hear the menu.

Where are the subs?
If you have forced air heating or cooling in your home, you probably know how difficult it is to understand speech on television or in a movie. Subtitles are great. Even if the closed-captioning isn't the most accurate, it is still better than missing out part of the conversation or interview.
It would be discomforting to have Google Glass subtitle the words that people in front of you are saying!

If I want to learn about something, how to do it - I read.
Reading and writing takes time. Knowing how to read instructions is important, responding to messages addressed to you, or to the general public, can go a long way. I have to admit that I haven't been reading novels lately, however magazines like the Economist, newspapers, and essays fill my time.

A game that is too difficult to be any fun : Guacamelee

I don't quite know what it takes to be a gamer, but if you are a little bit like me, you enjoy the story,  artwork, scripting, music and some challenge.
When it comes to Guacamelee, I haven't even gotten through a quarter of the game to end up being terribly frustrated. I am using an Xbox 360 controller, as it is recommended, but can't get anywhere past the Tule Tree. I have watched videos on YouTube, I understand what has to be done, but the timing is very, very difficult : jump (A), change dimension (RT), rooster punch (UP + B), change dimension (RT). Unfortunately, I just can't get it.

I must have spent hours on one screen and it is time that I give up and move on to something else.

Developers, please make games have varied levels of difficulty. Hints, difficulty scaling etc, would make a challenging game a lot more agreeable for many people.

Fallout 3 - Windows 8 - GFWL - Games for Windows Live Marketplace - Games for Windows Software is missing - SOLUTION

I was struggling to get Fallout working on my system. I bought it a few months ago, registered it on Steam, but never got around to playing it.

When I first started Fallout 3, I could change the settings, but the "PLAY" item on the menu would just result in the window closing and nothing happening.

To solve this problem :

  1. Uninstall Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE Redistributable
  2. Uninstall Microsoft Games for Windows Marketplace
  3. Uninstall Silverlight
  4. Reboot your computer
  5. Reinstall the Client for Marketplace here .
Now Games for Windows Marketplace should be working.

Xplornet crippled a legacy unlimited service for a slower limited service

Just over three years ago, I signed up for an unlimited data 3Mbps service with Xplornet. The modem was a Motorola Canopy. We were paying $50/month including the modem rental.

The speed of the service wasn't terribly fast, never reaching anything beyond 2Mbps, but it was unlimited. Watching a video on YouTube would require some patience for buffering, however I never felt concerned about using the internet.

Over the course of the summer, the service became unstable. Tech support did not help other than telling us to change our phones so that they be off the 900MHz or 2.4GHz range. That did not help.

Eventually, they sent in an installer who pretty much told us we have to move up to a different service which is more expensive. It is supposed to be 5Mbps downstream. The data is limited to 20GB which means it is impossible to use Netflix, download the latest game that you bought on Steam.
With more than one device in the house, updates are also frustratingly because they often take several hundred megabytes.

Nevertheless, here are some speed test results. Oh! What is 5Mbps anyways?

Hitman Absolution - Beautiful graphics, environment, and sound. Better AI and portrayal of women would have made it excellent

I just spent far too many hours playing Hitman Absolution. For the greater part, the game was fun.
When AI, Artificial Intelligence, is too good, the game is far too difficult to be fun. This game made me think that I am glad to not have aspired to become a police officer, fail in training, and default to become a security guard. These pawns were entirely disposable.

Other things that made little sense is the change into the uniform at each level. I understand that it is the character's distinctive look, but entering new environments, a disguise, even as a woman, would improve chances of success.
With regard to change of scenes or environments, were guards to be on high alert, opening a door seems to block them from moving all along to the next phase. Communication withing and between these teams seemed rather poor. I also would not like to be a guard, thinking how the disappearance of someone just spoken to has no influence on regular rounds. I somehow feel like the firefights killed the game which had so much potential.

I was quite frustrated with how the story was about the rescue of a girl.  I am not female, but the portrayal of women was not exactly balanced: all the police officers, miners, security guards were men. The few female characters were like concubines or attachées.
Some were well endowed femme fatales: the Saints, hypersexualized assassins dressed as nuns who received no character development, of course; Jade, an operator of the Agency; Layla, the wife of a manical weapon manufacturer.

Seeing that the writers of the game were all male, it is not a surprise that character development was not a strong point.

Free Downloadable FixMeStick Alternative - For Microsoft Windows PC or Mac OSX

FixMeStick was a featured pitch on CBC's Dragon's Den. The tool is intended to help when one cannot boot into their OS. The only times I have had a virus on my computer was the result of my experimentation. I downloaded a virus pack, and tried to launch some on my computer and see how well MSSE and ClamAV worked.

Certainly there are some people who always use administrator rights (or superuser) on their computer in order to save time when installing software, those who do not read what they install, or others who download and install the first item on the Bing or Google search results and then find themselves with malware on their computers.  Malware isn't necessarily software that will damage your computer or take your personal information, but unwanted pieces of software that force you to use a specific search engine, hijiack your operating system.

A write-protected system like a CD or DVD is ideal as it cannot be modified by the hackers in the stream (i.e. a host rerouting), however a disadvantage, like that of  FixMeStick, is the unified factor. Hackers know exactly what to target, thus the hacks, workarounds etc. are less labour intensive to develop. Therefore advantage of fragmented recovery setups is that hackers' tools cannot account for all of them.
If you were using computers between the years 1998-2007, Windows was synonymous with spyware,  malware, trojan and virus infections. Windows is a very secure operating system, but if more than 97% of the computers are running Windows, why would you bother creating malware for Linux or OSX. Most mobile phones are Android, and it is no surprise that we heard about viruses for Android... and later for iOS. Popularity comes at a price!

Before trying to make your own boot-up/recovery solution, I suggest try the free commercial solutions below:

The AVG Rescue CD

The AviraRescue CD
http://www.avira.com/en/download/product/avira-antivir-rescue-system

How the FixMeStick, or any bootable USB recovery system works

When you cannot get into your computer OSX or Windows based computer, the FixMeStick/RecoveryStick boots to its own operating system, bypasses OSX or Windows and then searches the hard disk for viruses, malware, or other unwanted changes to the registry and system start-up.

How the FixMeStick works  (or at least what would make sense)
  1. Computer boots to the OS on the FixMeStick.
  2. Devices on your computer are identified and the appropriate drivers are loaded.
  3. You will need to connect your computer to the Internet using either a WiFi or Ethernet connection (a USB modem tether would be fine too).
  4. Assuming that your router is not infected (rare, but possible), you will be asked to enter your Wifi password if applicable.
  5. The FixMeStick will update its virus and malware database.
  6. Your Windows based drives will be scanned for malicious programs (not quite code, but series of instructions in hexadecimal information )
  7. If any infected files are found, they will be quarantined or deleted. If the Windows Registry requires modification, registry editing will be required.

Antivirus Software

The antivirus software packages available on the FixMeStick are :
There are free virus databases that are as up to date  as those used by the the three packages listed above. On the recovery disk that we are creating we can use any of the following as listed on Linux.org :
There is also the Ubuntu Malware Removal Kit which could also be used.

Steps

Install Linux on a USB flash/thumb drive

  1. I recommend using Puppy Linux or Ubuntu Live and install it to a USB thumb drive. Puppy Linux is faster to download and easier to use, but Ubuntu offers better software support. For Windows prepare your USB drive using Rufus or any other ISO to USB tool. If your OSX computer is infected, it is also possible to install Linux to a USB stick. Instructions are found here : http://www.computerbastard.com/usbmac-puppy/

  2. Install all or some the antivirus software listed above.
  3. Scan your computer's hard drive for malware or viruses.
  4. Remove or quarantine the files
  5. If necessary, edit the registry or system configuration.

If you have any other recovery systems to share, please do below.

The 5 Year Detox Plan

After the holiday season, some people feel obliged to do something good for their bodies. The detox myth has been long demystified and featured on Marketplace. The following is a simple detox plan. No need to eat "superfoods", keep on eating bread and other products with gluten. Eat as much locally produced food as possible.

The steps to a clean body in 5 years or less :
  1. Start everyday with about half an hour of exercise.
  2. Eat a balanced breakfast which includes a large amount of carbohydrates (bread, rice, oats, millet, corn), a portion of fruit or vegetables and some beans, seeds(ie. sunflower, pumpkin) or nuts (including nut butter).
  3. To be physically fit is more than a few minutes of exercise a day. If you work in an office, set up your workstation to be standing rather sitting. To be happy, change jobs to start working working outdoors, such as farming, construction, surveying, or something where you must walk a lot like waiting tables, working in a daycare, nursing etc.
  4. As for lunch and for supper, a balanced meal must be colourful. It would mean a variety of vegetables, different grains and the use of oils. All edible vegetable oils, including peanut, soy, canola, flax/linseed, sesame, olive, avocado, coconut oil are good to use on a daily basis.
  5. If not already engaged in a community activity, take part in sports like ice hockey, curling, soccer/football, lacrosse, running, skiing, snowboarding, cycling, running, tennis, badminton, etc.
  6. The most important of all requirements for a healthy body is sleep. The more physical activity we do, the better we sleep.
The body's liver will do most of the work of keeping your blood and body clean. As long as you regularly treat your body well, you will be in good shape.

Windows 8.1 makes the touchscreen and your mouse obsolete.

Face it : a mouse is great for drafting and some web pages, but it is far from ideal for productivity; a touchscreen is... a touchscreen - unpredictable and gives the users no tactile(haptic when hovering ?!?) or visual feedback for actions. It is unfortunate that mobile phone developers have taken that route and that the trend caught on for tablets and PCs.

I am currently repeating my opinion that Microsoft did an excellent job with Windows 8.1. As long as you have a the most basic computer vocabulary and know where to locate the Windows Key, you can use the computer.
No need to learn all the shortcuts, but just tap the Windows Key and enter a term : reset, settings, reboot, the name of a software package - Excel/Steam/DraftSight...

I use the mouse for a few items, such as mouse over for certain icons in Word, Perapera Kun ( or just now to use the Blogger Associate/link function), but really you can do so much with the keyboard even in Windows 8.1.

Canada Action Plan - Fraud by the Conservative Party of Canada

The TV commercials have been going on for years. Like anything, the more often you see the advertising, the more you are likely to trust and like the subject.

Not yet fully unemployed, I went to the Canada Action Plan(CAP) web site at http://actionplan.gc.ca/ - the first question that you have is where can I sign up for this apprenticeship program? How about liking job seekers to employers.
All I could find was an option to sign up to a mailing list for job postings. It feels like something I had access to in 1993.

Last night on the National, there was a report about the program which is advertised under the Canada Action Plan, but is nothing more than propaganda : the advertised program doesn't exist.

It comes to little surprise as in late 2012, we also learnt how the Conservative Government is cutting funding for some programs but was adding $16M to the CAP advertising budget. In 2011, we also knew about this excessive spending through its choice of advertising slots.

Can I find work without applying online?

As much as love looking things up online, I hate the Internet. I don't use Facebook. Social networking in a virtual world doesn't interest me. E-mail is enough of a hassle.

With regard to my sudden task of looking for work, I hasn't taken me long to remember the experience that I dread: sending out my resume, writing cover letters that no one will read, and waiting for nothing to happen. Apparently very few people actually do find work from applying online.

What I plan to do over the course of the following weeks :
  1. Print out my resume. Read it aloud. Make corrections. Have somebody else read it and change the wording as necessary.
  2. Print out a number of copies of my resume, make my way to employment agencies (sigh), and drop it off. It will give me a chance to put a face to my resume should I speak with someone other than the receptionist.
  3. Try to find a job waiting tables, or something that will force me to move. Sitting down and facing a screen is very unhealthy.
  4. Get back into some of my hobbies : drawing, reading, programming. It is a little too cold to work on something out side which would involve my welder or other tools that are made with or of plastic.
  5. Continue to speak with friends. It is devastating being out of work, but there is no reason to pity myself. Maintaining relationships is more important than work itself.

Why my $150 Flux-core/MIG Welder is better than your $700 iPhone 5S

There isn't much of a comparison going on. A phone is a communication tool, a welder is a tool for repairs and construction. However, the technology of electric welders hasn't changed greatly in the past 40 years, and much like wood working tools, the future of a welder isn't going to come to an end anytime soon.

While I would love to have the opportunity to walk into a Starbucks and let my creative side come out by welding something like some people bring out their sketchbooks or laptops to write, the scenario is unlikely for health and safety reasons. Regardless, a welder is a far better investment than a piece of disposable consumer technology.

As a note here are some projects that I have in mind :
  • Repair the muffler hanger on my car
  • Make a pair of snowshoes with EMT tubing
  • Build a greenhouse
  • Build a sled for winter
  • Adapt the sled for a bicycle trailer
  • Build a wood stove
  • Make a sculpture with various pieces of scrap metal

Tools cannot be replaced : a plum bob, a level, a tape measure, a hammer, and of course a pencil will all outlive the latest HDTV projector or smartphone.
